Casement windows have a sleek, effortless look that suits both contemporary and period homes. Casement windows are a type of window that attach to a frame, using one or more hinges, and the windows are either hung by the top or side. Your windows can then either open inwards or outwards, and there are a number of different style combinations that can be created.
A side hung casement window is a simple, classic style, and they are popular due to their easy operation. You can leave them open a crack for some ventilation, and locks can be added for extra security. Top hung casement windows open from the bottom of the window frame, so if it’s raining, they can still be left slightly open at an angle.

What is a casement window?
Casement windows swing open, with hinges either on the top or side. You can fit single, double, or even multiple windows in one frame, with hinges that swing open outwards, ensuring maximum natural light and allowing you to let in fresh air.
Side hinge windows are probably the most common style. However, in the UK, you’ll often see top hung casement windows, also known as awning casement windows, with a hinge on top. This allows you to keep the window open at a slight angle, even in the rain. Bottom hung – or hopper windows – are less common but can be useful for spaces such as basements.
Do casement windows offer energy efficiency?
Casement windows have an airtight seal where the window sash meets the frame, which stops cold air getting in and warm air escaping during the colder months. This means they provide insulative properties for your home. You don’t waste money heating a room with a draught; therefore, your energy bills can be cheaper.
Double or triple glazing can make your windows even more energy-efficient, as well as having advantages such as noise reduction, which is ideal for those who live in busy, noisy areas.
Are casement windows the same as picture windows?
Casement windows attach to the frame with a hinge, which can either be installed to swing inwards or outwards, allowing you to get fresh air. A picture window doesn’t open at all, which means while you get an amazing view, they’re designed for places where you don’t need to open a window.
Another difference is that casement windows are usually made up of lots of sashes and panes in one frame, while a picture window is typically one large pane, which allows you to take in the view with nothing in the way.
Are casement windows secure?
The frames of casement windows have hook-shaped locks, which make it very difficult for a potential intruder to break into them. Some intruders have been known to try and pry these sorts of windows open, but you can be assured that this is very difficult with newer casement windows, as there’s a multi-locking system for layers of protection.
Kayvex is a member of an Official Police Security Initiative known as Secured By Design, which means we spend a lot of time perfecting the security of our window designs. This means you can feel confident that your windows are secure and safe
What do casement windows cost?
Casement windows can vary in cost, depending on the materials chosen, the complexity of the installation and how the job takes. Replacing like for like casement windows in an existing frame will be less labour intensive and cost less than installing completely new casement windows.
The cost of the windows will also depend on the style you choose. uPVC is the least expensive option, while timber or aluminium frames tend to cost a little more. The best way to find out the price is to contact us for a no-obligation quote and we can discuss your options in more detail.
Is it worth installing casement windows?
If you want to let light and air into your home, then casement windows give rooms a fresher feel. They can improve insulation in your home, with a strong seal that fits on the sash, keeping warm air inside and cool air outside during the winter. This can help reduce your energy bills.
Another advantage of casement windows is that they’re easy to use, even if you have limited mobility. They are opened and closed with a simple crank mechanism, which takes little effort to operate, so they usually have a one-handed function.
