French Doors

  • If you want to open up your home and make the most of your outdoor space, consider installing French doors. French doors are an excellent way to bring lots of natural light into your home, as well as fresh air on warmer days. Installing French doors can make rooms feel bigger, and allow you easy access to the garden, so you are more likely to take advantage of your outdoor space.

At Kayvex, we manufacture our own range of French doors, so you can be assured of the highest quality products. We offer a wide range of designs and finishes, with lots of options for personalisation, so you can get doors that suit your style and complement the character of your property. We can also fit features such as restrictors, which hold the door at an angle you choose, so they don’t slam shut in the wind.

French doors swing open from the middle, making them ideal as an entrance into your conservatory, onto your patio, or straight out into your garden. During the winter, you can sit inside and enjoy the garden views, and in the summer, you can open the doors and bring the outside in.

Do French doors have to be doubles?

French doors are made up of two doors that come in the same frame. These doors open outwards into your outdoor space, without a pillar or any obstruction in the middle. Technically, while these are double doors, we see them as one door as they are in one frame. A single door, or two separate doors on two frames, wouldn’t be classed as French doors. So yes, French doors by their definition come in pairs. If you do only have space for one door, however, contact us and we can work together to create the best patio door for your space.

Why is it called a French door?

French doors are named after their country of origin. This design first became popular in France during the Renaissance period, and it was heavily influenced by Greek and Italian designers. At the time, architecture was all about natural light, so grander homes were being built with larger windows. These glass doors became popular in French buildings, leading out to spaces such as balconies and terraces. While they took a while to reach the rest of the world, French doors are now seen in homes of all sizes and have a classic style.

Is there a difference between patio and French doors?

Many people use the terms patio and French doors interchangeably, but they are different things. French doors are made of two doors in one frame, which open outwards from the middle. Patio doors are usually sliding doors, with one or two sliding panels that can be moved across. Patio doors tend to be better for smaller spaces, as they take up minimal space, but the main drawback is that one panel is fixed, so they can’t be opened the whole way. French doors require a little more space, and can be fully opened, with a larger space to walk through and better ventilation.

Will I need planning permission to install French doors?

If your French doors will be at the back of your property, not facing a road, you won’t need planning permission to replace existing doors or make a larger opening for French doors. However, if you live in a listed building or a protected area, you’ll need to check that you will be able to make these changes, as the regulations can be more complicated. At Kayvex, we have a CERTASS certification, which means we can ensure any product we install complies with building regulations. You can feel confident when you choose us to make changes to your home.

Do French doors swing inwards or outwards?

French doors can be made to swing inwards or outwards. It all depends on the size and layout of your home and garden. You can choose inward-facing doors if there’s something in your garden that would get in the way of doors, or if they’d block a path. However, you’d need obstacle-free space inside your home. Outward opening doors are more common, as they free up space inside. If you’re worried about doors slamming in the wind, then we can add tension hinges to prevent this from happening. Kayvex can help you choose the perfect French doors and manufacture them to your specifications.

Can French doors increase my home’s value?

French doors tend to add value to homes when compared to standard doors that open into the garden. They are often looked on favourably by potential buyers, as they let lots of natural light into the room and show off your outdoor space. Like any home improvement, French doors need to be high-quality to increase value. Kayvex can manufacture and install your doors to a high standard, with excellent energy efficiency and security.
