Orangeries
-
Orangeries used to be attached to the finest homes, built as a space to keep exotic shrubs and trees that couldn’t survive the British winters. Nowadays, orangeries can be designed to suit all sorts of houses and are used for many different purposes.
An orangery is a simple way to add more space to your home while being more affordable than a full extension. Orangeries and conservatories are similar buildings, with the main difference being that orangeries are more solid and are made with more bricks in the structure. They have a dwarf wall around the bottom edge of the structure, and while the roof is still glass, the edges of the roof are solid too.
If you’re considering extending your home, it’s worth considering an orangery as it’s less expensive than a traditional extension, but more robust than a conservatory, so you’ll have a space you can use for lounging, socialising or dining for many years.
At Kayvex, we offer a range of orangeries that suit different property styles, and all of them can be personalised with different features to create your perfect space. Because our orangeries are manufactured by us in the UK, you can choose the materials, colours and fittings you want, so your orangery is a custom work of art.

Common Questions
What is an orangery?
An orangery has glass walls and a glass ceiling like a conservatory, but it will also have dwarf walls, pillars and a solid edge to the roof. They were used to grow citrus trees from Southern Europe, as they wouldn’t have survived outside in the bitter English winter. They were glamorous status symbols among the wealthy, and you can often seen them attached to stately homes even today. Now they are accessible to everyone and can be a practical and beautiful way to extend your home.
What is the difference between an orangery and a conservatory?
Many people confuse the two, but there are clear differences between an orangery and a conservatory. In most cases, a conservatory is completely glazed from floor to ceiling, as well as having a glass roof. This creates a seamless transition between your home and your outside space, giving you lots of natural light and garden views all year round.
An orangery is similar, but there is more brickwork in its structure. It will have dwarf walls, pillars and a solid edge to the roof. This makes them more robust and more insulative, as there is less glass surface area. It does mean that your view of your garden has more obstructions, however. Choosing between the two is up to you – contact us today to find out more or download our brochure for more inspiration.
Is an orangery warmer than a conservatory?
An orangery is often warmer than a conservatory because there are more solid walls and less glass. However, it completely depends on the type of glass, the materials used, and how well it was installed. For example, a conservatory made with our A+ rated double glazing will be much warmer than an orangery that has single-glazed windows, even though it has dwarf walls and a semi-solid roof. At Kayvex, all our orangeries and conservatories use our thermally efficient glass, to keep you cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
Is an orangery cheaper than an extension?
Although an orangery is more expensive than our standard conservatories, you’ll find that it will be cheaper than a traditional extension. If you’re looking for a bright and open space in your home that leads into your garden, an orangery is an excellent option and a stylish step up from a conservatory. Take a look at our brochure for some inspiration and see which one would suit you best.
