Replacement Conservatory Roofs
Older conservatories can often be in need of a revamp. If your conservatory gets too hot in the summer and is freezing in the winter, then you may want to look at upgrades such as replacement conservatory roofs.
Kayvex can give you a number of ways to upgrade your conservatory, depending on its age and style, as well as your budget.
If you’re considering a replacement conservatory roof, then polycarbonate is one of the least expensive options. It’s a quick and simple process to replace your roof, and it instantly improves energy efficiency. This means it’s much easier to create a comfortable temperature.
Glass conservatory roofs can also be replaced, which can make a big difference in how your conservatory feels. Older conservatories were often fitted with inefficient glass that lets the heat escape easily, but nowadays, you can get glass roofs that have a U value as low as 0.8 (the lower the number, the more insulative it is). This allows 78% of the sun’s heat to be reflected, so your conservatory doesn’t feel boiling on hot days, and is easier to heat when it’s cold.
You can also opt for self-cleaning glass. If you find your glass conservatory roof is often grubby, then this makes your life so much easier. The glass is coated with titanium dioxide, which creates a perfectly flat surface that it’s harder for dirt to stick to. Rain also slides right off these roof panels, so you don’t get droplets forming that cause watermarks.
You can also choose to have a UV filter applied to your glass roof. This will stop your conservatory getting too hot in the summer, and it will also prevent your soft furnishings fading over time.
One of the best ways to make your conservatory more energy efficient is to switch to a partially or fully tiled roof. These can be retrofitted to existing conservatories, as newer roof structures and tiles weigh less than most of the older style glass roofs. Ask about our Ultrasky and Livinroof products, which allow you to choose which panels you’d like glazed and which ones you’d like tiled, so you can decide how much light you want to let in. This upgrade is much cheaper than a new conservatory or extension.

While conservatories are an excellent way to enjoy more living space and make the most of your outdoor space year-round, they need to be in good condition so you can make the most out of them. Replacement conservatory roofs can upgrade an old conservatory that you rarely use and is cheaper than building a whole new structure.

Can I replace my conservatory roof with a tiled roof?
At Kayvex, we do a lot of retrofitted tiled roofs onto existing conservatories. People choose to do this to make their existing conservatory more energy efficient and to make it feel like a more seamless transition between their home and the conservatory. Often a new tile roof is lighter than the glass roofs fitted on older conservatories, so you don’t need to worry about whether yours can withstand the weight. Just in case, however, we will always send a surveyor to carry out a proper inspection to ensure that the existing structure has enough support in place.
Do I need to replace my conservatory roof?
There is no one-size-fits-all expiry date for a conservatory roof, as each one will age differently depending on the environment, the materials used, and how well or badly it was installed. After around 15 years, you might notice some telltale signs that could suggest your roof needs replacing:
- There is moss or algae growing on the roof
- Your conservatory seems to let in more outside noise than before
- You can feel draughts or cold spots
- You’re using more energy to heat the space.
If you think you might need a replacement roof, contact one of our friendly team today and we’ll talk you through your options.
Does insulating a conservatory roof work?
Some people might encourage you to insulate your existing conservatory roof, but we don’t over this service. This is because it isn’t worth the money; it doesn’t last very long and doesn’t even make much difference to how insulative your roof is. Instead, we’d recommend replacing your roof, either with our high-performance thermally efficient glass or a tiled roof. Both will make a huge difference, and your conservatory will feel warmer and be easier to heat.
What is the best roof for a conservatory?
The best roof for a conservatory depends on what you want from it. If you’re looking for a cost-effective option, modern polycarbonate is quick and easy to install and is much more insulative than old glass conservatory roofs. For a longer-lasting option, we’d recommend our toughened double glazing, which combines energy efficiency with strength for a robust roof. A tiled roof gives you shade in the summer and unrivalled insulation in the winter, which is ideal if you are looking for a garden office or playroom to use all year round. Add a lantern roof to give you the best of both worlds!
