Is it worth getting composite doors?
Composite doors are a great investment for your property. Not only do they offer increased security compared to other materials, they offer excellent thermal efficiency. They also come in lots of different styles to suit your property type. You can choose from a huge range of colours, different textures, and finishes
How long will a composite door last?
Composite doors are built to withstand tough weather conditions, so are perfect for British homes. Because of the way they are manufactured, they can cope with freezing weather, heatwaves, high winds and extreme rain, yet still look good for years to come.
Composite doors are very low maintenance. All you need to do is oil the hinges and give the door a wipe with a clean cloth when dirty. There’s no sanding, painting or varnishing needed. We’d usually expect a composite door to last about 30-40 years, although if they’re well-maintained, they can potentially last even longer than that.
Are composite doors cheaper than uPVC?
uPVC doors are slimmer and have a simpler production process than composite doors, so they can cost a little less. Our uPVC panel doors have more glazing options than our composite doors as well, so you can install decorative glass or high-performance glass so your hallway gets some natural light.
Composite doors are often more energy efficient than uPVC doors: composite doors come with brushes along the floor, preventing warm air from escaping and stopping any outside draughts from creeping in. Over time, this can help you save on your energy bills.
What is a composite door?
A composite door is one of the strongest and most hardwearing front doors on the market. Properly maintained, they can last decades. We make our composite doors from 100% CFC polyurethane foam in our composite doors, which is waterproof and has excellent insulative properties. Other companies use composite doors with a timber core, but we have found that they have a tendency to bow if water manages to penetrate the door into the inner core. We prefer to use materials that last as long as possible, which is why we use our insulative foam.
Simply wipe down your door to remove dirt when necessary and oil your hinges once a year, and your composite door should look beautiful and stay secure for decades to come
What material should I choose for a front door?
There are a number of materials you can choose for a front door:
- Wooden doors – These doors are available in a wide variety of finishes. They adda traditional, characterful look to any home and we can easily adapt them to any doorway size. They’re not as popular as our other front door options as they do require more maintenance to stop them becoming degraded by weather damage.
- Composite doors – To make these as strong as possible, we’ve mixed a variety of different materials and fused them together to make a super-strong composite door. Safe, durable and insulative, these are a great long-term choice for any front door.
- PVCu doors – We now offer our PVCu front doors in such a variety of finishes that you’re bound to find one that you love. Our PVCu is highly resistant, insulative and cost-effective; and you can easily personalise them to complement your home
Ideally, you should think about the kind of look you want, your budget and how much maintenance you’re willing to do.
How do I choose a new front door?
Choosing a new front door can be difficult, as it is something that you will have for decades to come. The easiest way to decide on which type of front door will work for you is working out which factors you want to prioritise on.
If you’re looking for a classically attractive front door, then wooden doors are a great choice, but they do require regular maintenance to keep them looking beautiful. Composite and PVCu doors, on the other hand, require much less maintenance, and they are now available in a huge array of colours and designs.
